As CBD oils continue to grow in popularity, it is important to find out what exactly green leaves organic CBD oil is, how it is made, what benefits it can offer, and what legal status it has in your country before buying it.
CBD is fast becoming a mass phenomenon right now. From tinctures to creams to beverages, the market seems to be inundated with products containing this ingredient.
Why CBD is so popular is easy to explain: CBD oil, in particular, offers many advantages in the treatment of a wide variety of diseases.
However, the staggering number of new products on the market can be confusing, making it difficult to figure out what is best for you. When buying and consuming CBD, a few aspects should be taken into account: For example, it should be checked how the products are manufactured, what advantages CBD can offer, and what legal status CBD has in your country. What is CBD Oil?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a phytocannabinoid that was discovered in 1940 by the American scientist Roger Adams. Its chemical structure was recognized in 1963 by Raphael Mechoulam’s team. CBD can be obtained from both cannabis and hemp. Hemp is the name of a group of high-fiber cannabis strains that are lower in cannabinoids. It is defined as Cannabis sativa by the EU. This means that it contains less than 0.2% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the intoxicating component of cannabis. In the US, cannabis that contains less than 0.3% THC is classified as hemp.
A legal exception in some countries that allowed the cultivation of hemp varieties for industrial purposes resulted in the fact that with the knowledge about the medicinal properties of CBD certain hemp varieties were bred and crossed to increase the CBD contained in them so that it could be extracted could and is now used as raw material for a variety of products. This situation created a regulatory loophole where the legality of CBD products is quite vague and constantly changing.
Don’t confuse CBD oil with hemp seed oil, however. CBD oil is extracted from the entire hemp or cannabis plant. This is how it differs from hemp seed oil, which is only obtained from the seeds. Hemp seed oil (sometimes simply referred to as “hemp oil”) can offer health benefits, but actually contains no cannabinoids and therefore no CBD.
With the popularity of this product growing, more and more people are asking, “What does CBD oil do?” A common concern about CBD oil is whether it will get you high. Hemp-based CBD products only contain traces of THC, which means that they are not intoxicating.
Also, studies have shown that CBD is not addictive: In a report by the World Health Organization from 2017, the authors concluded that CBD “has no effects that indicate a potential for abuse or addiction”.
To bring order to the chaos surrounding CBD oil, the first thing to know is that there are different types of CBD extraction, and all of them can be applied to all cannabis strains: full-spectrum extraction, broad-spectrum extraction, and CBD isolates.
Full-spectrum CBD oil
Full-spectrum CBD oil is a whole plant extract, meaning it contains not only cannabidiol, but other natural components that are leached out during the extraction process, including other cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes. Many of these additional components have their therapeutic benefits and the entourage effect theory holds that the individual components work even better when administered together.
This means: If a full-spectrum oil with 20% THC and 1% CBD is extracted from a cannabis variety, the oil contains all the components of the plant and thus the same ratio of THC to CBD as the original plant. If a full-spectrum oil is obtained from a hemp variety with less than 0.2% THC content, the resulting oil does not contain more than 0.2% THC.
A 2015 study found that full-spectrum cannabis extract with a high CBD (17.9%) and low THC (1.1%) content was more effective than oil with isolated CBD – especially for inflammatory diseases. This observation was further substantiated in a meta-analysis that examined the clinical benefit of CBD-rich extracts versus pure CBD extract (isolate).
Broad-spectrum CBD oil
Broad-spectrum CBD oil is a relatively new term for an extraction process that isolates and removes certain molecules from the oil. With this, all traces of THC can be completely removed, even if the original plant contained less than 0.2% THC.
CBD isolate
Isolate extraction identifies a specific molecule in a cannabis plant and extracts only that specific molecule while completely removing all other components. In the case of CBD extraction, the result is pure CBD oil without any other cannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes, or other ingredients.
How is CBD Oil Made?
There are several different CBD extraction methods.
A popular method is alcohol extraction. The plant is soaked in alcohol for a long time, which dissolves the CBD and other components in the alcohol. This is the same extraction method that has been used in herbal medicine for centuries and is a very effective way to extract cannabinoids with minimal loss. Although the alcohol as a solution protects the chemical components, it also dilutes their purity.
With CO2 extraction, on the other hand, the highest degree of CBD purity is usually obtained. This extraction method has evolved in recent years due to significant technological advances in the field.
In CO2 extraction, the hemp plant is exposed to liquid CO2, high temperature, and high pressure to extract the molecules.
CBD oil can also be obtained with the help of hydrocarbons. This process uses a hydrocarbon such as butane to heat the plant, releasing its oils.
Making CBD Oil at Home
Making CBD oil yourself has some advantages compared to purchased products, mainly because it saves money and you know what’s really in the oil. However, the process takes a long time and requires a lot of attention for a high-quality CBD oil to be made.
You can make CBD oil at home using either a high CBD strain of cannabis or hemp. There are two ways to make CBD oil at home: oil or alcohol. Know more at https://penguincbd.com/
The oil method
You will need cannabis or hemp with high CBD content, a jam jar, a carrier oil (such as fractionated coconut or olive oil), a large saucepan, towel, cheesecloth, and a glass bottle.
- Make sure that the vegetable raw material has gone through the process of decarboxylation. To do this, bake it for 90-100 minutes at a temperature of 100 ° C.
- Grind the plant material and put it in a jam jar.
- Cover the plant material with a carrier oil. We recommend fractionated coconut or olive oil. Adjust the amount of oil. The more oil you add, the lower the concentration of the end product.
- Close the lid of the jam jar tightly.
- Take a saucepan and put a towel in it. Place the jam jar on the towel and fill the pot with water.
- Heat the water to at least 95 ° C. Cover the saucepan and let the water simmer for three hours.
- Turn off the stove and let the pot sit for another three hours.
- Heat the mixture again for another three hours.
- Turn off the stove and let the pot sit overnight.
- Strain the mixture through a cheesecloth, transfer the contents to a glass bottle, and store in a cool, dry place.
