Everyone learns in different ways. Perhaps the students that you tutor are visual learners through and through, or maybe they’re a mix of kinaesthetic and auditory. They could even have a mix of all learning styles with a preference towards one or two.
No matter how your students learn, however, you need to be able to tailor your teaching style to suit. For many, this is easier said than done, as we tend to have preferred ways to communicate information that closely align with how we process it. That’s why today, we’re sharing five tips for crafting lessons that work for each of your students and their unique learning styles.
Join A Community Of Other Tutors
It can be incredibly beneficial to join a community of like-minded individuals who also offer online tutoring for high school students. This will help you get exposure to teaching styles that aren’t your normal go-to while also giving you a safe space to ask for assistance in tailoring your lessons when you need help.
Provide Multiple Examples To Demonstrate Concepts
Another great way to help your students advance is to have a relevant example for each learning style when demonstrating the concepts you have to teach. While this will obviously take a bit longer to establish, it will not only improve your students’ learning outcomes but also your teaching abilities. This makes it well worth the effort, especially when you consider the fact that taking a flexible approach like this could bring in extra clients through referrals.
Get Students To Summarise Information
By seeing how each student that you are tutoring chooses to relay information back to you, you can better establish their preferred learning style. This will help you frame future sessions in a more productive way while also allowing you to assess how well your students are grasping the concepts you’re sharing with them. In turn, this gives you the data you need to identify (and rectify) any gaps in their knowledge.
Present Information In Bite-Sized Chunks
Presenting information in bite-sized chunks isn’t just a good way to help your students retain information – it’s also a great way to ensure you’re teaching in a way that suits their learning style. By focusing on content in smaller blocks you’ll be able to pivot your teaching far more easily if you need to switch up your style. You’ll also gain more feedback from your students along the way since the smaller chunks will give you more opportunities to check in with them.
Create Study Groups
This tactic only really works if you have a collection of students from the same school who are interested in the idea and are studying the same subject. If you meet these criteria, creating a study group for the students you tutor can be highly beneficial to those who are social learners.
There’s no need to worry about embarrassment due to needing a tutor as every student in the group shares this in common. This should free them to open up and explore concepts together as well as with you. You could even consider facilitating these groups for a reduced fee for each student if you all feel that this would be beneficial.
There are so many ways for us to teach and learn, so it makes sense that each individual will have their own style when it comes to processing information efficiently. By following these tips and tailoring your teaching to each student’s learning style, you’ll be able to level up your tutoring game.
